Lenses · APS-C, large image circle
APS-C lenses with M42 mount
This range is built for the APS-C image circle — noticeably larger than 4/3″, which is why it uses an M42 thread rather than C-mount. The vendor datasheets name the main application directly: line scan cameras with large pixels, where a big image circle and resolution headroom are required. Focal lengths from 18 to 55 mm, manual focus.

How to choose
The letters AF in the part number do not mean autofocus: the whole range is fixed focal length with manual focus. Most versions have a manual iris, but some are fixed (for example MVL-AF5528-M42) — check the specific part number. Mind the flange distance too: M42 will not fit a C-mount camera without an adapter, and the adapter adds its own thickness.
FAQ
Does AF in these M42 lens names mean that focus is automatic?
No. The range uses manual focus even though AF appears in the part numbers. Focus distance must be set mechanically within the interval stated for the selected lens.
What optical dimensions define sensor coverage and framing?
Specified focal lengths extend from 18 mm to 55 mm and image circles from 28 mm to 42 mm. Match image circle to the APS-C sensor, then use focal length and working distance to establish the required view.
How widely do the available focusing intervals differ?
The nearest stated limit is 103 mm. Some lenses focus to infinity, while others end at 595 mm, 999 mm, 1051 mm, 1400 mm, or 1500 mm. The planned object distance must fall inside the exact lens interval.
Is the iris adjustable on every lens in the category?
Most listed versions have an aperture interval, with openings from F2.4 to F4.5 and closing values from F11 to F22. MVL-AF5528-M42 is shown only at F2.8, so iris behavior must be checked by part number.
What is required to place one of these lenses on a C-mount camera?
The lenses use an M42 × 1 thread and do not fit C-mount directly. An adapter is required, and its thickness contributes to the flange arrangement, so mechanical spacing must be evaluated with the intended focus distance.
