Bi-telecentric lenses

In a standard telecentric lens, constant magnification is guaranteed only on the object side. A bi-telecentric lens keeps rays parallel on the sensor side as well — removing the residual dependence of magnification on sensor position and markedly reducing distortion. Chosen where measurement is in microns: precision parts, inspection against a master, metrology benches.

How to choose

Look at distortion, telecentricity and the lens's own resolution — all three limit measurement accuracy, not just one. Depth of field on bi-telecentric lenses is quoted with an aperture condition (for example "± 18.9 mm @ F16"): at a different aperture the figure changes.

FAQ

Why choose bi-telecentric rather than object-side telecentric optics?

A standard telecentric lens guarantees constant magnification only on the object side. A bi-telecentric design also keeps rays parallel on the sensor side, reducing distortion and the dependence of magnification on sensor position during precision measurement.

Which values should be fixed before comparing lens part numbers?

Fix the camera sensor group, required magnification, available working distance, listed optical diameter and mount. The range spans 0.085× to 2× and 40 mm to 410 mm, so magnification and stand-off need to be evaluated as a pair.

How are the four bi-telecentric lens groups separated?

MVL-HBT covers sensors up to 1/1.8″, MVL-MBT covers 2/3″, MVL-KBT covers 1″–2″, and MVL-LBT is the large-format group for 2″ and above. Select the format group before narrowing by magnification and distance.

What mounting options appear across the lens range?

C-mount appears throughout the smaller-format entries. The table also includes M42 × 1, F-mount, M58 × 0.75 and M72 × 0.75 options. Mount thread and the listed optical diameter both need to match the selected camera configuration.

Why must aperture be considered when checking depth of field?

Depth of field is quoted with an aperture condition, such as ± 18.9 mm at F16. A different aperture changes that depth figure. Distortion, telecentricity and lens resolution must also remain part of the accuracy check.
