Lenses for 1/1.8″ sensors (5–10 MP)
The 1/1.8″ format is one of the most common in machine vision: many 5–10 MP cameras are built around it. Focal lengths run from 4 to 75 mm with a C-mount and about a 9 mm image circle. The rule of selection: the lens must cover the whole sensor. A 1/1.8″ lens also works on smaller formats (1/2″, 1/2.5″), but on a 2/3″ camera it darkens the corners.

How to choose
Focal length is estimated from working distance and field of view: f ≈ WD × sensor width / field width. A 1/1.8″ sensor is about 7.2 mm wide (take the exact figure from your camera datasheet — it differs between sensors), so 300 mm and a 100 mm field give ≈ 21.6 mm. That is a first estimate only: check the FOV table in the datasheet of the chosen lens — it accounts for what the formula omits, and the numbers differ noticeably.
FAQ
What sensor formats can the 1/1.8-inch lens class cover?
It covers 1/1.8-inch sensors and can also be used with the smaller 1/2-inch and 1/2.5-inch formats. It should not be carried over to a 2/3-inch camera because the approximately 9 mm coverage class darkens that larger sensor's corners.
How does working distance enter the focal-length choice?
Estimate focal length as working distance multiplied by sensor width and divided by field width. With the stated approximate 7.2 mm sensor width, 300 mm working distance, and 100 mm field, the result is about 21.6 mm. Confirm the final choice in the lens FOV table.
Which optical checks distinguish lenses of similar focal length?
Compare the resolution designation, maximum aperture, image-circle size, and minimum object distance. At 50 mm, MVL-HF5024M-10MP is F2.4 with a 0.3 m minimum distance, while MVL-HF5028M-6MPE is F2.8 with a 0.25 m minimum distance.
How does minimum object distance change across the range?
Many lenses from 4 mm through 25 mm are listed at 0.1 m, although MVL-HF2528M-6MPE uses 0.2 m. Longer entries include 0.15 m at 35 mm, 0.25 m at 40 mm, 0.25 m or 0.3 m at 50 mm, and 0.5 m at 75 mm.
Why is MVL-HF1228M-8MP separated from the main lens list?
MVL-HF1228M-8MP is identified as a hybrid lens supplied with PD Series code readers. The other entries provide focal length, aperture, image circle, mount, and minimum object distance, so the hybrid item should be retained as its own stated application branch.
