Long-working-distance optical placement

An 82 mm image circle, 120 mm focal length and three magnification settings make MVL-LF12040M-033V-M90 a long-working-distance M90 optic. It operates at 0.31x, 0.33x or 0.38x with 0.005% distortion. The F4.0 to F16 aperture, manual iris and manual focus give the integrator direct control after the camera and target geometry have been fixed.

Working distances are 558, 535 and 480 mm, each with a ±5 mm tolerance, for the respective magnification settings. These distances leave space between the lens and object for lighting or handling equipment in dimensional inspection. Corresponding object-to-image distances are 778, 758 and 710 mm with ±9 mm tolerance, useful when laying out the entire optical axis rather than only the front clearance.

MVL-LF11638M-0625V-M90 uses the same M90 × P1 interface and 82 mm image circle, but its 0.59x to 0.66x range works around 239.9 to 260.5 mm. MVL-LF8040M-021V-M72 reaches 0.31x at 325 mm and changes to M72 × P0.75 with a 60 mm image circle. Select the 120 mm lens when lower magnification, M90 mounting and roughly half-metre object clearance must coincide.

Selection and applications

Long-clearance dimensional inspection. Large-image-circle registration. Fixed 0.31x to 0.38x imaging.

Minimum kit: Combine the lens with an M90 × P1 camera interface, then set manual focus and iris at the working distance assigned to the required magnification.

Nearby in the range: MVL-LF11638M-0625V-M90 — Prefer it for 0.59x to 0.66x imaging at working distances near 250 mm.; MVL-LF8040M-021V-M72 — Prefer it for an M72 mount, 60 mm image circle and working distances down to 325 mm..

FAQ

How are this lens's three magnifications tied to working distance?

At 0.31x the working distance is 558 mm, at 0.33x it is 535 mm, and at 0.38x it is 480 mm. Each value carries a ±5 mm tolerance, so the selected magnification should be established together with the physical camera-to-object spacing.

Which dimensions describe the complete optical-axis layout?

The object-to-image distances are 778, 758 and 710 mm for the three listed setups, each with ±9 mm tolerance. The lens itself is 83 mm in diameter and adjusts from 207.6 to 232.6 mm in length.

What mounting geometry must the camera provide for this lens?

Camera attachment is M90 × P1, and the flange back length is 12 mm. Pair that mechanical interface with a sensor arrangement that can use the 82 mm image circle, then reserve enough axial clearance for the adjustable lens length.

Are focus and aperture adjusted electrically or by hand?

Both focus control and iris control are manual. The aperture spans F4.0 to F16, so setup involves setting focus, aperture and the chosen 0.31x, 0.33x or 0.38x geometry at the machine before acquiring reference images.

When is the 120 mm version preferable to the 116 mm M90 lens?

Use MVL-LF12040M-033V-M90 for 0.31x to 0.38x imaging at 480 to 558 mm. MVL-LF11638M-0625V-M90 is the alternative for 0.59x to 0.66x at the shorter 239.9 to 260.5 mm range while retaining M90 × P1 mounting.
